York Health Walks

About Us

Our York Health Walks scheme provides 14 free group walks of different lengths from 12 different locations across the city of York.  Please choose a walk which is suitable for your ability and fitness level. We recommend that you always check with your GP before increasing your activity levels.  We welcome new or returning walkers.  Come along and join us for some sociable and invigorating exercise.

Our York Health Walks brochure containing a timetable of our led walks is available free of charge from libraries, health centres and other community venues.  A new edition is published twice a year, January and June. The current brochure can be downloaded from the right of this page.

Which walk is right for me? If you are new to or are getting back into walking, we suggest that you start gently with a short walk of up to 30 minutes duration. Then you can gradually build up your fitness at a pace and location that suits you. Medium length walks are up to 60 minutes in length and longer walks of up to 90 minutes are available too. The heart symbols on the timetable in our walk leaflet are a quick guide to the length of our walks. Children under 18 years old must be accompanied by an adult. Our shorter walks have wheelchair and pushchair friendly route options.

How do I take part? Simply turn up on the day - no need to book. All walkers are asked to arrive 15 minutes before the walk start time to introduce themselves to their Volunteer Walk Leader and complete the registration process. If you bring your dog on a walk please ensure you keep it on a lead and be considerate of the needs of other walkers. Toilets are available at all meeting points and are also available on most routes. You may want to bring a drink or some money to buy one. Walkers often meet together after walks for refreshments at a local cafe or similar meeting place. Please wear clothes and footwear suited to the weather conditions on the day.

Going further!  Visit the yortime website; www.yortime.org.uk and search for "walking groups" to find more details of other walking groups in York.

Would you like to become one of our team of Volunteer Walk Leaders? We provide free training and ongoing support to all our Volunteer Walk Leaders. We are always looking for enthusiastic walkers to support our successful scheme. If you would like to volunteer your time to help other people enjoy walking this could be the opportunity for you. You would be joining a team of about 30 dedicated volunteers who are very friendly and supportive.  Please contact us to find out more.

Our Events

We provide a range of different length walks from locations across the city of York.  Some walks are located in the city area, others on the outskirts.  Our programme gives you more details of times and meeting venues.
