Stratford-on-Avon District Health Walks

About Us

Walking for Health walks are led by trained volunteers from the local community. Health walks are perfect for beginners as well as those who would like to become more active or perhaps lack confidence and and knowledge about where to walk. The Stratford-on-Avon District Health Walks Scheme offers walks ranging from 10 to 90 minutes.  Routes are typically fairly flat and take in either urban or countryside surroundings.

Most of the groups naturally split into smaller groups of faster and slower walkers. Therefore, leaders typically devise routes which enable walkers to join for a shorter or less demanding route. No special equipment is necessary - just dress appropirately for the weather and wear comfortable, sensible footwear. Walks will be led during all weather conditions unless it is unsafe to do so.

Walking is a great form of exercise which has benefits to physical and mental health. It is recommended that adults should complete 150 minutes of physical activity a week in order to gain the health benefits. This could be completed in 30 minute intervals, five times a week. For most people, physical activity does not pose a risk, however if you have a medical condition, disability or are new to exercise, it would be wise to seek medical advice before starting any activity.

All new walkers are required to complete a short walker regsitration form.

Stratford-on-Avon District Health Walks Scheme:

All the walks detailed below are free to join.

Monday at 10:00 - from Stratford Leisure Centre. Between 30 to 60 minutes in duration, this socialable group usually walk at a gentle pace, always meeting afterwards for refreshments.

Walks include well-known routes along the tramway and recreation ground, through the town or by the canals and the River Avon on flat tarmac surfaces and paths, with occasionally some small steps.

Monday at 10:30 - Bidford-on-Avon Walks from the bridge across the Avon. Usually between 60-90 minutes in duration and often split into two groups to accommodate both faster and slower walkers.

This walk alternates between a small number of popular scenic routes such as along the River Avon to Marlcliff; around the golf course; and to Broom village. Walkers are welcome to stop for refreshments after their walk.

Tuesday at 14:00 - Southam Walks from Southam Leisure & Visitor Centre.This walk, at a gentle to moderate pace, varies from 60 to 90 minutes in duration depending on the route. This walk takes you through the town and out to local parks and historical attractions such as the Merestone, the Holy Well, and along parts of the Heritage Trail.

Wednesday at 10:00 - from Stratford Leisure Centre. Between 60 to 90 minutes in duration, this group often split into two groups to accommodate faster and slower walkers. 

Walks include well-known routes along the tramway and around the recreation ground, through the town or by the canals and river. The walks are mainly on flat tarmac surfaces and paths with some fields and bridleways included. This walk often stops at a local café for refreshments at the end of the walk.

This group will organise a longer more challenging walk from time to time and occasional social outings.

Friday at 09:45 - Wellesbourne Walks, meet at the Village Hall. The walks are usually between 60 to 90 minutes in duration and are suitable for all levels and abilities. This group will often meet at the Village Hall and then drive/share cars to another location to start the walk.

 

Stratford-on-Avon District Council also provide a Walk, Jog, Run session at Stratford-upon-Avon School athletics track on Wednesdays between 17:30-19:00.  This is a friendly, safe, relaxed and flexible opportunity to exercise at your own pace for free.  This is an unsupervised session and no registration is required.
