Walk for Health Bristol

About Us

Walk for Health Bristol supports a number of Walking for Health groups affiliated to Bristol City Council, offering a variety of free friendly walks from 10 - 90 minutes.

News: December 2018 - June 2019

Cuts to Public Health funding in 2018 resulted in the loss of council officers including the Walking for Health Bristol scheme coordinator, Darron Hamilton (May 2017 - December 2018).

Nicola Ferris is acting as interim scheme coordinator (BCC Neighbourhoods and Communities) until end of June 2019 whilst working with existing health walks groups that sit under the council scheme (19) as well as city wide partners to plan for sustainability.

If you have any queires about the future sustainability of the existing walking programmes please contact Nicola Ferris: nicola.ferris@bristol.gov.uk

Walk for Health Bristol works in partnership with other Bristol based schemes (Hengrove Park Leisure, Knowle West Health Park, The Downs Walking Programme and St. Monicas Trust) to offer programmes of regular, short, led walks.

To find more information about the walks please see walk descriptions and programmes attached below, also Bristol City Council website here

Bristol Amblers meet weekly on various mornings of the week in the central Bristol.

Walks are around 2 - 3 miles (60 - 90 minutes) with additional time if public transport is used to get to the walk start. All the walks are led by trained leaders, are free (you may have to pay bus fare and refreshments) and are designed to accommodate people of various abilities.

Brislington Walks

We meet at least fortnightly on weekday mornings at various locations in and around Brislington or Bristol City Centre. We often use public transport to reach areas of interest in Bristol and the surrounding countryside.

Walks are suitable for people who can walk over 2 miles (40 - 80 minutes) without a break. We aim to organise walks around 2 - 3 miles (60 - 90 minutes) in length and when possible will offer different length options of walk to suit different abilities.

CREATE strolls - Monthly accessible Friday walks

We welcome walkers with addtional needs, set up in parternship with Bristol Autism Spectrum Society.

Meet at The Create Centre, Smeaton Road, Hotwells on the first Friday of the month.

Walks are 2 - 3 miles (60 - 90 minutes) and we always have a refreshement break at the end or in the middle of the walk. For more information contact Victoria Short: victoriashort@nhs.net  07710764540  / 01275796204

Henbury Walks

Henbury Healthy Walking group began in June 2004 and we walk every Thursday starting from Crow Lane, Henbury at 9.25am. We use the bus service for all our walks other than the local Henbury/ Brentry walks. Nearly all our walkers enjoy the benefits of free bus concessions. All walks are checked by leaders for health and safety and do not involve difficult terrain. Walk leaders are present on each walk. This is a group to exercise easily, see parts of the area in a different light and be amongst friends. Come and join us.

For a programme with full details of walk starts and times please contact  Mary Mellett or Roger Thomas

Hillfields Walks

Walks are led by volunteers and the group often travels in or around Bristol and surrounding countryside by bus to get to the walk start. The group generally meets up in the Fishponds / Hillfields area of Bristol but sometimes they meet in Bristol City centre. Walks are between 2 and 3 miles in length (60 - 90 minutes)

A refreshment stop is an essential part of every walk so bring money for a cuppa!

For a recent programme of walks contact Zenia Pudduck (volunteer): zp@mie.uk.net

Lockleaze and Horfield  Walks

Lockleaze and Horfield Strollers walk fortnightly on a Tuesday morning. Walks range from 1 - 3 miles (30 - 60 minutes) and meet either in the Lockleaze or Horfield area or in central Bristol. Buses are often used to get the walk start. Bring money for refreshments.

The Lockleaze weekly walk meets every Wednesday to walk in Stoke Park for a 1 - 2 miles (45 - 60 minutes).

For more information please contact: TBC

St George Strollers

We arrange 2 walks per month and we have 5 volunteer walk leaders.  Our walks are usually of 90 minutes in duration and around 3 miles long.  Our programme, published every quarter and available via www.troopers-hill.org.uk/strollers, details the level of difficulty of the walk, availability of toilets and refreshments.  Photos of earlier walks can also be viewed via that link.

We usually either start walking in St George or take a bus from St George (BS5) to our start point.  The postcode we have entered on this website is for Aldi on Church Rd in St George which is probably the place we most frequently meet to start a walk but please look at the programme for the actual starting point of each walk. The group is very friendly, vary greatly in age and background and have a wide range of reasons for coming.  The walk leaders aim to make the walks enjoyable and interesting as well as providing exercise.  The leaders encourage walkers to wear sensible footwear and lend walking poles to walkers to try so they can decide whether they wish to buy their own to help them on walks.

For more information contact Susan Acton - Campbell by emailing strollers@troopers-hill.org.uk
