Taunton Deane: Walk Well in Taunton

About Us

Walk Well in Taunton is supported by Greenwich Leisure in partnership with Taunton Deane Borough Council, to encourage local people to become more active, more often.

The programme is designed to be an excellent way of improving your health through regular walking in the local community.

Walk Well in Taunton has a "sister" scheme, Walk Well in Wellington.  Visit the Walk Well in Wellington webpage on this website for more details.

Our Walk Well schemes have their own dedicated website where you can view the programmes and other relevant information.  Please visit www.walkwellwithtone.btck.co.uk

The scheme provides three different types of walk for varying levels of stamina.  The shortest walks are between 20 and 30 minutes, approx. 1.5 miles in length and are aimed at those people who are new to walking and want to be more active in the company of other people.

We also have walks that take between 40 and 60 minutes and 2-3 miles in length.

Both of the above options take place on Wednesdays and Fridays at 10:15.

We also have fortnightly walks on Sunday mornings which are between 1 - 1.5 hours.  Sometimes the walks on a Sunday can be a bit more challenging - when this is the case, they are not a health walk - they are labelled on the programme as a Progression Walk.  See the programme for the details.

Progression Walks - these are NOT Health Walks.  They are for those who already have a good level of cardiovascular fitness, they are longer walks of 2 - 2.5 hours and approx. 4 - 5 miles in length.  The meeting places for these walks are either in Taunton or within 10 miles of the town.  These walks meet at  10:15am on Mondays. The Monday walks are monthly.

All walks meet at various meeting points in Taunton.  They are graded in terms of difficultly and accesibility.  Some walks are suitable for baby-buggies and some are accessible.  Many of the walks start and finish near a cafe where walkers usually go for refreshment afterwards.

Please contact the Co-ordinator for details of the current programme or download it from this page.  The current programme includes the Walk Well in Wellington and Ruishton and Creech St Michael walks.

First Volunteer Celebration for Tone

Volunteers were thanked by Tone, the charitable Leisure Trust and social enterprise at a Celebration Evening held at Lyngford House in Taunton in March 2013.

Forty volunteers who help people to get active so that they can improve their health, gathered for an evening celebration.  Special awards were given to those who had made outstanding contributions in the last year.  The award winners were:

Sylvia Barsby, Health Walk Leader, Taunton - The Helping you Feel Good Award

Jenny Dilley, Health Walk Leader, Wellington - The Inspiration Award

Pat Pike, Health Walk Leader, Flexercise Leader, Taunton - The Volunteer Progression Award

John Hunt and Jean Hunt, Health Walk Leaders, Wellington - The Healthy & Active Lifestyle Award

Sue Worringham, Health Walk Leader, Frome - The Innovation Award

Joy Boaden, Health Walk Leader, Taunton - The Special Recognition Award

Tone has almost 100 local people now volunteering across a range of activities and programmes in local community settings.  Every volunteer was presented with a certificate and commemorative pin badge, in recognition of their dedication to helping people in their own community to lead a healthy and active lifestyle.  Presentations were made by Tone Leisure Trustees and Taunton Deane Borough Council member, Cllr Catherine Herbert, and invited guests included Cllr Vivienne Stock-Williams.
