St George Strollers (Walk for Health Bristol)
The St George Strollers are a walking for health group in Bristol, whose walks generally start from the area of St George. They are given much support by Bristol City Council's "Walk for Health Bristol" scheme and the group features on the Bristol City Council website, with other Bristol Walking for Health groups on www.bristol.gov.uk/healthwalks.
The St George Strollers are supported by the volunteer conservation group, Friends of Troopers Hill. Grants have been raised by the Friends to pay for walk leader expenses, publicity and special walks where, for example, transport might be provided to a destination which is not easily reached by public transport.
We usually either start walking in St George or take a bus from St George (BS5) to our start point. The postcode we have entered on this website is for Aldi on Church Rd in St George which is probably the place we most frequently meet to start a walk but please look at the programme for the actual starting point of each walk. We arrange 2 walks per month and we have 5 volunteer walk leaders . Our walks are usually of 1.5 hours duration and around 3 miles long. Our programme, published every quarter and available via www.troopers-hill.org.uk/strollers, details the level of difficulty of the walk, availability of toilets and refreshments. Photos of earlier walks can also be viewed via that link.
Numbers attending the walks vary from 36 down to 12 if weather conditions are poor.
The group is very friendly, vary greatly in age and background and have a wide range of reasons for coming. The walk leaders aim to make the walks enjoyable and interesting as well as providing exercise. The leaders encourage walkers to wear sensible footwear and lend walking poles to walkers to try so they can decide whether they wish to buy their own to help them on walks.
So far, since May 2011, we have not repeated single walk. In January 2013 we had to cancel a walk for the first and only time due to ice and snow.
We hold two meetings a year with light refreshments provided, after a short walk, to find out whether our walkers have suggestions for future walks, are happy with what we are doing, if there are suggestions for improvement and any other matters of concern. The meetings are usually in May and December and details are published on our programme which can be viewed via www.troopers-hill.org.uk/strollers.
