South Tyneside: Walking Works Wonders

About Us

Want to explore your local area?

Increase your activity levels and meet new people?

Then Walking Works Wonders is for you.

The Walking Works Wonders scheme is a well-established walking programme offering 8 FREE walks in South Tyneside and Newcastle delivered by a dedicated team of trained volunteers.

With a range of walks available in areas including Cleadon, Whitburn and Newcastle Quayside across five days a week there is something for everyone. For the full list of walks please see below or visit the walk calendar.

Everyone is welcome and no previous experience is necessary. These walks are designed as ‘health’ walks and are perfect for beginners or those returning to gentle exercise. The walks last for approximately one hour.

What to wear/bring

Clothes and shoes you are comfortable walking in. Please check the weather before you join the walk and bring appropriate clothing such as a waterproof jacket or suntan lotion. We recommend you bring some water too, especially on hot days.

If you are new participant please arrive 10 minutes before the walk is due to leave to enable the walk leader to introduce themselves, explain the route and allow you time to fill in a very short registration form.

You will be able to spot the walk leaders as they will be carrying a clip board and may be wearing a high vis jacket.

What is the weather bad?

The walks happen in the rain! Obviously if the weather is very bad such as gale force winds, icy conditions or heavy snow the walk will not commence. Best efforts will be made to ensure this website it kept up to date with any walk cancellations, however this may not always be possible please use your own judgement on whether you think the walk will be cancelled.

Want to volunteer?

New volunteers always wanted to increase our walk capacity. Free walk leader training is provided, as well as basic first aid training and equipment.
