MyJourney Health Walks

About Us

MyJourney is an initiative aimed at making it easier to get around Southampton. A number of activities are provided as part of the MyJourney programme, including a number of health walks across the city.

Our Walks

The walks are fun, free and friendly, and walkers are invited to join for a cuppa and a chat after the walk. A great way to get active, socialise and meet new people!

Mondays at 10am from the Hawthorns Centre on the Common - a moderate walk that lasts just under an hour. We stay on the pavements and it’s completely off road apart from the Cowherds car park. Many walkers stay afterwards for a social tea or coffee and a chat. New people should arrive 10 minutes before the start of the session to meet the walk leader and register.   This walk is for people who are reasonably fit.

Mondays at 2pm led by the Grove Medical Practice in Freemantle - a mixed pace walk of about 30 minutes on the pavement on quiet roads in Freemantle and Upper Shirley. There are some kerbs and roads to cross. It is a great walk for people just beginning to walk to improve their health, as well as for people keeping fit as we have two different groups that set out. Many walkers stay afterwards for a free social tea or coffee in the medical centre. New people should arrive 10 minutes before the start of the session to meet the walk leader and register.

Tuesdays at 2pm - 'Stress Buster' walk from the Hawthorns Centre on the Common - a moderate walk that lasts just under an hour. We stay mostly on pavements, although sometimes on gravel tracks.  It’s almost completely off road, but the route does vary. Many walkers stay afterwards for a social tea or coffee and a chat. New people should arrive 10 minutes before the start of the session to meet the walk leader and register.   This walk is for people who are reasonably fit.

Wednesdays at 10:30am from the bottom of the ramp on the Cobden Bridge side at Riverside Park - a gentle walk that lasts about half an hour. It is a great walk for people just beginning to walk to improve their health. We have chosen a route that includes benches throughout if people need to stop along the way.  We stay on the pavements and it’s completely off road. Dependent on interest, we can have a social tea or coffee at a cafe in Bitterne Triangle. New people should arrive 10 minutes before the start of the session to meet the leader and register.

MONTHLY on the second Wednesday of the month at 10.30am from Central Library in the Civic Building.  In partnership with Macmillan, this walk is designed for anyone affected by cancer.  The walk will be once a month on the second Wednesday and will be run by trained volunteers ready to offer you support and advice in confidence.  The walk will be around Central Parks and incorporates mindfulness and breathing techniques.  Enjoy refreshments with the Macmillan team in the library afterwards. New people should arrive 10 minutes before the start to register. (Gentle pace 45 minute 'Walk and Talk')

Thursdays at 10:30am from the Hawthorns Centre on the Common - a moderate walk that lasts just under an hour. We stay on the pavements and it’s completely off road apart from the Cowherds car park. Many walkers stay afterwards for a social tea or coffee. New people should arrive 10 minutes before the start of the session to meet the leader and register.  This walk is for people who are reasonably fit.

Thursdays at 11:30am  from the Weston Lane Healthy Living Centre - a gentle walk that lasts about half an hour.  It is designed for people just beginning to use walking as a way to improve their health.  We'll stay on pavements and paths, and can adjust the route to suit the participants.  We'll have a tea or coffee back at the community room at the Weston Lane surgery.  New people should arrive 10 minutes before the start of the session to meet the leader and register. (Gentle 30 minute 'Get Fit' walk)

Fridays at 10am - Portswood Dementia Friendly Walk in Portswood Meet outside the Mayflower Court Care Home on Westfield Road, Portswood.  A gentle 30 minute walk around residential areas, perfect for wheelchairs/pushchairs and carers welcome.  Join us in the Mayflower Care Home for a cup of tea afterwards.  New people should arrive 10 minutes earlier to meet the walk leader and register.

Other groups that walk:

West Itchen Community Trust run a health walk that starts from their offices at 53 Derby Road and goes into the parks in the city centre. For more information contact Gulzar Sharif at West Itchen Community Trust on 023 8038 8580 or email g.sharif@wict.co.uk.

Please see the MyJourney Southampton website www.myjourneysouthampton.com for more information about walking and to download the current walk programme.

We couldn’t do our walks without the support of our volunteers. If you’d like to be a walk leader, contact us at activetravel@myjourneysouthampton.com or on 02380 834 219 for more information on how you could help lead or support regular walks — we ask for at least one session a month.  We provide free training to people who would like to help out with the walks, help plan walks, and provide paperwork and other help. We can also offer support for workplaces or community groups who would like to organise walks for their organisation, whether it's a lunchtime de-stress walk, a buggy walk from the school gate, or a family walk with a residents association.
