Abingdon Health Walks

About Us

Health Walks are short organised walks, led by trained volunteers from the local community. Designed with health in mind they can improve both physical and mental health by offering a safe, friendly and supported environment where everyone can walk at their own pace and not be left behind to walk alone.

In addition, walking can make you feel good, give you more energy and help you sleep better.

New walkers are always welcome. Please arrive 15 minutes early for a simple registration process and introduction. For further information please contact Viv Boorman by telephone or email.

Our Walks

The Abingdon Health Walks scheme offers three walks every Monday morning and three walks every Wednesday morning. On both mornings there is a Gentle walk, a Moderate walk and a Brisk walk. These walks are approximately one hour in duration.

On Friday mornings there is a Moderate walk only.

All walks start and finish inside the White Horse Leisure and Tennis Centre, Audlett Drive, Abingdon, OX14 3PJ. They always leave at 10.30.am. Cafe and toilet facilities are available in the leisure centre.

The Gentle walk is between 2 and 2.5 miles long and the route is mainly flat and easy and has no steps or stiles. This walk is designed for people who do little or no exercise. Shorter loops are available if needed.

The Moderate walk is approximately 3 miles long and is taken at average walking pace. The walk is designed for walkers to achieve or maintain reasonable fitness levels. Sometimes the walk is a little longer and can last up to 75 minutes.

The Brisk walk is between 3 and 4 miles long and is designed for people who want or need to stretch themselves a little more and progress their fitness. Sometimes the walk is a little longer and can take up to 75 minutes.

We have a wide variety of routes to walk. Depending on the time of year and the weather conditions we make use of the Thames path from Radley to Culham Bridge, Radley Lakes, the Ock Valley Walk, the Sustrans path, Albert Park, the Abbey grounds and the rich history of Abingdon, together with the quieter paths around the town and local area. All walks are led by trained volunteer leaders.

Please wear sturdy footwear as the local paths may be muddy especially after rain.

Regular Walks from Preston Road Community Centre

We have regular walks on Thursday mornings starting and finishing at the Preston Road Community Centre, Midget Close, Abingdon, OX14 5NR.

The walks will last up to 1 hour and will be at the ‘One step at a time’ / GENTLE level to meet needs. Tea and Coffee will be available after the walk. Walks start at 10.30am.

Our Events

The social and wellbeing side of health walks is very important to us and to support this we have a vibrant series of events throughout the year.

These include lunches, usually twice a year, at a local pub or restaurant with walks before in the local area to build up an appetite. At Christmas we have had social quiz evenings, a live music dance and for Christmas 2018 we have planned a barn dance.

We also organise away trips by coach, usually two or three a year, for walks and/or shopping and sightseeing. These are very popular events and recent trips have been to Bath, Winchester, Salisbury Christmas market, Exbury Gardens and Beaulieu Motor Museum, Worcester and Gloucester. Planning for this years’ trips is underway.

Other events such as summer picnics or celebratory meals also take place. We welcome ideas for events from our walkers.
