Bury: Walk with Me

About Us

Bury – Walk with Me was created through Bury Sport & Physical Activity Service to provide a variety of led walking opportunities throughout the Townships of Bury.  In 2015 Bury Walk with Me was awarded Full Accreditation Status for its dedication & commitment to this nationally recognised scheme and as part of our ongoing commitment to Walking for Health along with the help from our amazing Volunteer Walk Leaders, Bury - Walk with Me has now established weekly Health Walks in Bury, Summerseat, Greenmount, Prestwich, Radcliffe and most recently in Ainsworth & Birtle providing 10 weekly walk options to the communities of Bury.

As part of our ongoing commitment to the provision of such health walks, Bury - Walk with Me will contine to work hard to extend & develop led walking opportunities through all areas of Bury & tin doing so, catering for a variety of fitness levels, ranging from shorter 30 minute walks to longer walks lasting up to 90 minutes in duration.

So whether you are a complete beginner wanting to get more active, or simply feel that you would benefit from walking in a group environment with likeminded individuals, our weekly health walks maybe just what you’ve been looking for, so keep an eye out for one of our health walk starting in your area soon.

Why do we need a walking programme?

It's a fact that most of us are not as active as we should be. Obesity levels among the population are increasing at an alarming rate. It is clear that some action needs to be taken to improve the health and fitness of us all. Walking is a simple, gentle form of exercise that can be done virtually anywhere and anytime. Walking is probably the easiest and most beneficial form of exercise there is. It is free to do, and most people can walk at least a short distance.

An extra 20 minutes a day can burn off an extra 7 pounds of body fat per year.

It can lower blood pressure and cholesterol.

It can help relieve stress.

Strengthens the muscles in your hips and torso.

Helps the environment if you are walking instead of using a motor vehicle.

Gives you time to think and helps increase problem solving ability.

Improves your posture.

Walk with me - Bury

We are delighted to share our exciting news that 3 of our very special Volunteer Walk Leaders who were nominated in the Inspiring Walkers category to recieve the Ramblers 2018 National Volunteer Award - HAVE WON!!

Eileen Robinson, Ann Bowes & Brian Marshall are volunteers with the Bury - Walk with Me Walking for Health Scheme. Over the past three years they have collectively delivered over 400 health walks, equating to over 600 volunteer hours, helping to improve the health and wellbeing of over 300 walkers. Over 4,500 attendances have been recorded so far – an outstanding level of participation.

Not only have they been long standing, dedicated volunteer walk leaders to the scheme, but each has played a significant supporting role in helping to mentor and guide new volunteers through their walk leader training, enabling Bury – Walk with Me to grow and expand the walking offer to other communities within the borough. It’s undoubtedly down to the commitment and dedication of Eileen, Ann and Brian that we have been able to establish, grow & develop our Bury scheme to provide more health walks to the people and communities of Bury.

Eileen, Ann & Brian were invited to attend the recent Ramblers Conference held in Bangor, North Wales where they were presented with their well deserved award.

Well done to each of you & thank you to everyone who voted for them!
