North Shropshire Walking for Health

About Us

North Shropshire is such a lovely place to walk in as you can stroll around the attractive market towns or villages where there is always something interesting to see, or you can, in only a few minutes be out into the countryside.   Most people just like to come for a short, quite slow paced walk, but are always pleased at how much easier it gets each week.   People who come on our walks like to have a chat and look forward to a drink afterwards.  If you would like to join us please just come along, or contact me, Liz Evans at Liz.Evans@shropshire.gov.uk.

Baschurch

A walk along the paths and footpaths of the lovely village of Baschurch, both starting and fnishing off at the Admiral Duncan for refreshments.  Walks start at 10.30 every Wednesday from the Admiral Duncan which opens at 12.00 for refreshments.

Ellesmere

We meet every Wednesday at 10.00 at the Canal Wharf Ellesmere. Please meet 10 minutes before start of the walk. We welcome all abilities of walkers, and particularly those who may be less able, slower walkers.

Sorry - No dogs allowed on walks

Every week there is a one hour walk & two hour walk.

One hour walks include steps and slopes & occasionally may involve stiles, this will be indicated on the program. Routes may be muddy, so please wear suitable footwear. Many walkers find that a stick gives them confidence when tackling slopes and muddy conditions.

Walking shoes or boots are essential for the longer and more strenuous walks. These will last two hours or longer, if we go by car. Please bring refreshments and a drink, There are muddy paths, slopes and stiles on these longer walks.

Cars will be used to take people out for many walks. Please try to help by bringing your car to the Ellesmere Wharf/ Tesco Car Park.

We do appreciate offers of help from car owners who are willing to take passengers.

After each walk all walkers are invited to join the group at the Black Lion for a Coffee or Tea.

Hadnall

Every Tuesday at 10.30am meet at Hadnall Village Hall car park, for a series of low to moderate intensity flat local walks.  We have 2 flat walks: a flat walk of 45-60 minutes and a slower paced walk for approximately 30 minutes.  This is a free session, everyone is welcome, with no requirement to book.  With tea and coffee available afterwards at a cost of 20p.

Higher Heath

Meet at the village hall every Tuesday at 10.00am.  This is an ideal place for an easy flat walk lasting about an hour.

Market Drayton

Come and explore the lovely market town of Market Drayton with us.  We meet every Friday morning at the Beacon Community Centre, Prospect Road at 10am.  Depending on the weather and the abilities of our walkers, we will either go along the canal, which is always pretty, or down to Walkmill Meadows, or across the bypass and over the fields.  We try to keep it varied, but most people like to chat along the way and are happy to look at whatever we see of interest while we are walking.

Oswestry

There are currently 3 walks within Oswestry - Tuesday mornings will take you through town and out into the countryside. Tuesday afternoons will go out into the paths on the north side of town.  Thursday mornings are a walk around the town - you will be surprised at places you have never been.  This walks lasts up to an hour.

Tuesday morning, meet at the Cambrian Railway Building at 10am.  These walks last just over an hour and will usually leave the town and go on to footpaths.

Tuesday afternoon, meet at the Gatacre sports pavilion, 2pm.  Walks will go out onto footpaths, lasting for an hour and a half, exploring the undulating countryside of Oswestry.  Walks finish at Gatacre for a drink.

Thursday morning, meet at Avalon Day Centre, Victoria Road, 10.30.  Walks last up to an hour on easy terrain such as pavements or easy access footpaths.  There may be some slight gradients, but we walk at a gentle pace and will accommodate new walkers.  Walks finish at Gatacre for tea and coffee.

Shawbury

This group meets every Monday morning, 10am from Shawbury Village Hall.  Walks last about an hour, with an option for a shorter one if required.  All walks finish off with the chance for a cup of tea and a natter in Shawbury Village Hall.

Wem

Monday mornings at 10.00 from Edinburgh House, Wem.  Walks are average 30-60 minutes, low to moderate intensity, flat local walks around the town or close footpaths.

West Felton

On the 3rd Monday of the month there is a group meeting at 10.00 and going from the village hall.  Walks are gentle and will last just over an hour.

Whitchurch

On the 2nd 3rd and 4th Wednesday of the month there is a short town walk, starting 10am at a gentle pace between 30-60 minutes.  Routes are stile free but may occasionally include steps and gentle slopes.

On the 1st Wednesday of the month there is a longer walk venturing onto local footpaths, lasting 60-90 minutes.  Please note this starts at 10.15 to accommodate people coming on the bus.

Both walks start at the newly reburbished civic centre and end with refreshments in a local establishment.
