Get Wiltshire Walking

About Us

Get Wiltshire Walking" is a Public Health funded project which aims to ensure every community within the county has access to a FREE weekly led walk.

Walking is the lowest risk of all physical activities yet produces massive benefits to physical fitness and mental wellbeing.

This is a great way to explore your own local area and can be a really excellent way to make new friends and learn more about your immediate community.

Currently there are 26 weekly led walks in 18 locations throughout the county, there is no limit to the number of walks you may attend.

Each walk has its regular starting venue on the same day and time every week. We try to vary the routes each week.

Strider walks are almost continuous and last between 60 and 90 minutes across variable terrain and may contain some gradients.

Stroller walks last between 45 -60 minutes with regular pauses and are on variable terrain.

Starter Walks last around 30 minutes and are on flat stable terrain with frequent pauses.

After the walk many groups have coffee and chat together.

Providing you are independently mobile and able to meet the physical demands of the walk everyone is welcome

Unfortunately we cannot permit dogs on the walk.

Code of Conduct

For Voluntary Walk Leaders, Walkers and Staff

In line with the equality and inclusion policies of Wiltshire Council and the ethos under which the “Get Wiltshire Walking” scheme has been established and operates, we have developed a Code of Conduct for the project.

This Code applies to everyone who joins and walks with the project whatever their level of involvement.

The “Get Wiltshire Walking” Scheme’s main expectation is for its Voluntary Walk Leaders, Walkers and Staff to work together to help “Get Wiltshire Walking” achieve our aims and deliver our strategy.

While doing this, all participants of the scheme should be guided by these values at all times.

Our values are to be:

·         Welcoming - to all and particularly to newcomers

·         Positive - looking to have fun and create enjoyment

·         Empowering - helping give people the confidence to help themselves

·         Inclusive - welcoming people from diverse backgrounds and being sensitive to the needs of different   communities and abilities

·         Ethical - being respectful of others, honest in what we say, and thinking through the consequences of what we do

·         Democratic - working to deepen and improve democracy within our organisation

·         Environmentally friendly - responsible promoting activities and behaviours that are respectful to and which benefit the environment

Code of Conduct

Our Code of Conduct sets out the basic principles of how everyone involved in the scheme should behave.

All participants should work together in a spirit of mutual respect and understanding.  Walk Coordinators, Voluntary Walk Leaders, Walkers and Staff will work collaboratively to deliver our strategic aims and, in doing so, benefit the wider public.

We will uphold the values of the “Get Wiltshire Walking” scheme and promote them when working with each other and when working on behalf of the scheme with people outside of “Get Wiltshire Walking”.

                      ·         We will challenge attitudes and behaviour which disregard our values

·         We will recognise the structure of the “Get Wiltshire Walking” scheme and acknowledge that we may have differing lines of accountability which means that we may have to say no to requests.

·         We will recognise that our organisation is accountable to external organisations and is regulated externally, which means that we cannot always do what we may want.

·         We will aim to communicate our requests and decisions clearly, effectively and with courtesy. We will avoid language or behaviour which may come across as offensive. We will listen to each other, especially where we may disagree.

·         We will strive to make the “Get Wiltshire Walking” scheme an enjoyable environment for everyone who works or volunteers to support it

Do:

·         Be considerate, respectful and courteous to others at all times.

·         Be inclusive, tolerant and patient, always endorsing Wiltshire Council’s policy on equality and diversity.

·         Ensure you represent the “Get Wiltshire Walking” brand well.

·         Listen to any information or guidance the Walk Leader gives and act upon it accordingly.

·         Follow the Country Code.

·         Follow the Highway Code (pedestrians).

Do Not:

·         Use aggressive or inappropriate behaviour in any form.  This is not tolerated.

·         Engage in any inappropriate or unsuitable conversations or use language likely to cause offence.

·         Attempt to disrupt or alter either the route or pace of the walk or bring undue influences to bear on others within the walk.
