Cheltenham: Walk Well

About Us

**Local walks for Local people**

Come and join us on one of our regular, weekly walks which are FREE walks led by locally trained volunteers.

We walk 9 times a week Monday to Friday from various locations around Cheltenham and would love you to join us. We offer different options at each walk - shorter, 30 minute walks and a longer 45min-1 hour. We hope that this will help to accommodate those new to walking as well as those who would like more of a challenge.

SUMMER SUNDAY WALKS!

May 6th - Kilkeney-Pegglesworth (New this year)

The first half of this 6km/3¾ mile route is on hard surfaces, with some fine panoramic views over the rolling hills to the north and east, while the second half is through woods then crosses fields, which may be soft after rain. The route starts by crossing the nature reserve and continues along a quiet country lane before descending along a track past Pegglesworth Home Farm and ascends to the main road. Across the road it passes through the top of Lineover wood then over fields to cross the main road again. Crossing two more fields, return to the country lane to return to the start.

Meet at 2.15 in the car park at the Kilkenny view point, which is off the A432 between Seven Springs and Andoversford. Coming from Seven Springs turn right 400m before the Kilkeney Inn (signed Hilcot 2 miles) then almost immediately turn left into the car park.

June 3rd - Painswick Beacon

The walk is 5km/3miles, mainly dry turf and woodland paths, which may have a few damp patches if it rains. Excellent views from the top of the Beacon/Hill Fort.

Meet at 2.15pm at end of the lane behind the Royal William. From Cheltenham take the A46 through Brockworth towards Painswick. Just past the turn to Cranham, turn right before the Royal William and drive up the lane to the end where there is parking for several cars.

July 1st - Andoversford-Foxcote-Thorndale (New this year)

The 6km/3¾ mile route takes the track past Owdeswell Manor then turns right across fields to Foxcote where it turns left to climb gently past Foxcote Manor to reach the track from Thorndale racing stables. It turns left down the track to cross the Withington road then across a field to the track past the golf course and back to Andoversford. There are some muddy sections after rain so wear suitable footwear.

Meet in the Royal Oak car park in Andoversford at 2.15. There is usually plenty of parking in Station Road which is opposite the Royal Oak and runs between the two exits from the A40 leading into Andoversford.

August 5th - Cranham-Coopers Hill (New this year)

From Cranham the 5¾ km/3½mile route climbs gently through Buckholt Wood, crossing Sanatorium Road to join the Cotswold Way which it follows through more woods to the top of Cooper’s Hill, where in May mad fools pursue cheeses down the precipitous slope. The route turns right to The Buckholt then through the woods next to the road to descend back to Cranham via the Monks Ditch track. There are sections that can be muddy after rain.

Meet at 2.15 in the car park on the outskirts of Cranham. Turn left off the A46 at the Cranham sign and immediately right. After 1km the car park is on the left just before the ‘30mph’ and ‘Cranham - Please drive carefully’ signs - if you reach the scout hut on the left you have gone too far.

September 2nd - Leckhampton Hill (New this year)

The route is 5.4km/3.4miles on firm ground, which can be slippery when wet, tracks and tarmac. The route passes the Devil’s chimney and offers excellent views over Charlton Kings and Cheltenham.

Meet at 2.15 in the car park off Hartley Lane, which is the first left past Daisybank Road, leaving Cheltenham up the Leckhampton Road. Follow the lane uphill past the quarry car park and as the lane levels out the car park is on the left just past the modern house.

October 7th - Cleeve Hill

The 5¾ km/3½miles route starts from the golf club and crosses the common, with fine views over the race course to Cheltenham and beyond. Reaching the aerials and dew pond, an optional short diversion visits the highest point in Gloucestershire. The route returns along a track from which a second optional diversion, involving a short but steep climb, can be made to visit the topograph with stunning views over the Severn Vale.

Meet at 2.15 in the quarry car park, turning left after the cattle grid past the Golf course club house which is up the lane off the B4632 Winchcombe road at its highest point. The route is dry underfoot but wrap up warm as it can be windy.

Summer Sunday Walks
Walk Option 1
1:30

We have a fantastic group of volunteers who support our programme offering a friendly and warm welcome to new and returning walkers. Tea and coffee is encouraged after each walk and many of our walkers take up this opportunity - helping people to get to know each other and build friendships.

We are always looking to add to our group of volunteer walk leaders. If you are interested in leading and/or supporting a walk on our existing programme or you would like to start up your own walk, please contact the Health and Wellbeing Coordinator. We can offer you;

- Free walk leader training (1 day)
- Support to market and promote your walk
- Membership to our Walk Leader Forum

So, if you enjoy walking, meeting new people and socialising, have good local knowledge and want to help out in your local community, please contact Chris Davis for more information.
