Insurance and risk assessments
We provide third party civil liability insurance cover for all trained Walking for Health walk leaders in England when they are leading health walks.
Leaders are automatically covered by this insurance when they have completed the volunteer walk leader training. It covers them only in the event that a legal claim for damages is made against them alleging that they were negligent on a health walk. It's not personal accident or medical cover insurance.
If you'd like to find out more, you can read a full overview of the insurance policy here, and the confirmation of cover is also available.
Walking is a very low risk activity, however, as health walks are organised activities, those who organise and lead them are regarded in law as having an 'enhanced duty of care' to the people who attend. To ensure the safety of walkers and protect ourselves, our schemes and our leaders against any possible legal claims, we ask schemes to carry out risk assessments of all their routes for best practice.
If you'd like to find out more about why we recommend risk assessment of routes and how they should be carried out, please take a look at our risk assessment guidance.
And you can find our current risk assessment form in our volunteering section, here.
