"Walking for Health offers a clear mechanism for primary care and other professionals to refer people to an appropriate led walks programme"
Public Health England, 2014
Walking for Health is England’s largest network of health walk schemes, run by the Ramblers and Macmillan Cancer Support. For over 12 years we’ve been helping all kinds of people to lead a more active lifestyle.
Spending just 60 seconds recommending Walking for Health to your patients will encourage them to increase their levels of physical activity, ultimately saving lives and money, and reducing clinic numbers.
If you're a health professional interested in creating links with your local Walking for Health scheme, promoting local walks in your practice, or if you want to start your own walk, get in touch.
We're currently working with some health professionals to help us test a signposting protocol. You can find more information about the pilot here - and please contact us if you're interested in working with your local scheme or have any questions.
The evidence for walking as a moderate intensity exercise that can be beneficial to all people continues to grow. Our primer pulls together some of this mounting evidence, and you can also read our 2013 document Walking Works here.
Hear straight from our walkers and volunteers about how Walking for Health has contributed to their mental and physical health and wellbeing. Click here to read walker case studies, here for volunteer case studies, and here for scheme case studies.
You can also watch the video above, or read this case study by a GP in Wigan about the impact that signposting to Walking for Health has had at their practice.
