North Shropshire Walking for Health

About Us

North Shropshire is such a lovely place to walk in as you can stroll around the attractive market towns or villages where there is always something interesting to see, or you can, in only a few minutes be out into the countryside.   Most people just like to come for a short, quite slow paced walk, but are always pleased at how much easier it gets each week.   People who come on our walks like to have a chat and look forward to a drink afterwards.

Please note, due to the nature of the group walks participants are encouraged not to bring dogs (except guide or assistance dogs) on the walks.

If you would like to join us please just come along, or contact me, Helen Foxall, Helen.Foxall@shropshire.gov.uk

Ellesmere

Every week there is a 1  hour 'Walking for Health' walk and a 2 hour 'Next Steps Progression' walk.

The walks take place on a Wednesday and we meet at the Canal Wharf Ellesmere ( which is just around the corner from Tesco's car park).

**We leave promptly at 10.00am for the Walking for Health walk :

This is a  60 minutes Grade 2 walk :and includes steps and slopes & occasionally may involve stiles. Routes may be muddy, so please wear suitable footwear. Many walkers find that a stick gives them confidence when tackling slopes and muddy conditions.

We welcome all abilities of walkers, and particularly those who may be less able, slower walkers.

**We leave promptly at 9.45 am for the Next Steps Progression walk  ( Please note: Next Step walks are not part of the Walking for Health scheme but as with the WFH walks they too are led by trained Volunteer Walk Leaders):

The Next Steps walk is a 2 hour Grade 4 Countryside walk. Walking shoes or boots are essential for these longer and more strenuous walks and act as a progression from WFH walks for those who are ready for a longer and more challenging walk.  These last 2 hours (or a little longer including the car journey, if we go by car).  Please bring refreshments and a drink. Please note the pace is faster, and there are muddy paths, slopes and stiles on these longer walks.

We suggest you arrive at the meeting point 15 minutes before the start of the walk that you wish to attend, to ensure you are ready to leave at the times given above.

Sorry - only assistance dogs are welcome on our walks.

Cars will be used to take people to the start point for a number of our many walks, so please try to help by bringing your car to the Ellesmere Canal Wharf/ Tesco Car Park. We appreciate offers of help from car owners who are willing to take passengers.

After each walk all walkers are invited to join the group at the Ellesmere Comrades social club  to buy a Coffee or Tea and carry on chatting.

Hadnall

Every Tuesday at 10.30am meet at Hadnall Village Hall car park, for a series of low to moderate intensity flat local walks.  We have 2 flat walks: a flat walk of 45-60 minutes and a slower paced walk for approximately 30 minutes.  The walks are free, no requirement to book.  With tea and coffee available afterwards at a cost of 20p.

Kinnerley

Meet at the village hall.

Walks usually take place on the 2nd and 4th Monday of the month for a walk around the village. ***Please note that due to bank holidays and holiday times in 2019 there will be some variant in walk dates during June, July and December 2019 - please see the individual page for the walking group for full details.

Walks leave at 10am for a walk of 60 - 90 mins. We try to avoid stiles where we can, but there may be some stiles on some routes - the walk leader will advise about this in the pre-walk talk before the walk.

Market Drayton

Come and explore the lovely market town of Market Drayton with us.  We meet every Friday morning at the Beacon Community Centre, Prospect Road and walks leave from there at 10.00 am.

We offer two walks each week, a shorter 60 mins walk or a  longer 90 mins walk

Depending on the weather and the abilities of our walkers, we will either go along the canal, which is always pretty, or down to Walkmill Meadows, or across the bypass and over the fields.  We try to keep it varied, but most people like to chat along the way and are happy to look at whatever we see of interest while we are walking.

Please note we go on an ' Away walk ' on alternate weeks, these are walks located within a radius of approx 5-6 miles from Market Drayton and we still meet at the Beacon and leave from there at 10.00 am - we try to car share for the ' Away walks' where possible.

Oswestry

Our walk is on a Tuesday morning and takes you through town and out into the countryside onto footpaths, the walk lasts for 60-90 mins.

We meet at the Cambrian Railway Building and the walks leave there at 10.00 am.  We end up at a coffee shop after the walk for anyone who wishes to carry on chatting.  **Please note there is no Walking for Health walk on the 1st Tuesday of the month.

For further details of the Oswestry Walking for Health walk, please contact David on 07901 917599

Shawbury

This group meets every Monday morning, 10.00am from Shawbury Village Hall.  Walks last about an hour, with an option for a shorter one if required.  All walks finish off with the chance for a cup of tea and a natter in Shawbury Village Hall.

Wem

Monday mornings at 10.00 am from Wem Town Hall.  Walks are average 30-60 minutes, low to moderate intensity, flat local walks around the town or close footpaths.

West Felton

Monday mornings at 10.00 am from outside the shop / Punch Bowl pub in West Felton.

An easy walk around the village, using roads and footpaths. We meet for a walk every Monday - walks are 60-90 minutes in duration and leave at 10 am from outside the shop / Punch bowl Pub.

Please note that once a month on the 1st Monday of the month we go on an 'away' walk, we still meet at the same place and leave from there at 10.00 am but take cars a short way to a different start point for the walk, for a bit of variety.

Please note that although we love all dogs, only assistance dogs are appropriate for a walk for health.

Whitchurch

We offer a varied walk programme with walks of different grades and duration - see details below:

The  walks on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month are long walks ( 90mins) and the walks on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month are shorter walks,(45mins).

When there is a 5th Wednesday in a month the walk tends to be a walk away from the town for those wishing to explore a bit further afield.

We meet inside the Civic Centre for all our walks and end with refreshments in a local establishment.

**Please note on the 1st and 3rd Wed of the month we leave from the Civic Centre at 10.00 am for the walk

and on the 2nd and 4th Wed of the month we meet at 10.00 am but leave from the Civic Centre at 10.15 am for the walk

Thank you to the Beechtree Community Centre who help organise and support these walks.
