North Tyneside: Getting Active Walks

There are a number of weekly walks taking place in North Tyneside of varying lengths.

THe weekly walks include a social side where the group finishes up with tea/coffee as the walk concludes. 


Our walks

Monday 10.30am- 12pm (approx 60 min walk)
The Parks Walking Group. Meeting point - The Parks Sports Centre reception area, Howdon Road,North Shields. Contact: Gillian Adam 0191 643 7441 

Tuesday 9.30am onwards (approx 2 hour ramble) Runs every 2 weeks . Healthy Hearts Walks. Various starting points. Based at Tynemouth Pool, North Shields, Tyne and Wear. Contact: Tony Dawson on 0191 643 2900 to ensure correct meeting point is provided.

Tuesday 10am - 12noon (approx 2 hour ramble) (Runs the 1st and 3rd Tuesday each month). Killingworth Walkers based at the White Swan Centre, Killingworth. Contact Howard Smith on 0191 268 2084 to gain details of the walking route.

Wednesday 12:30 - 1.00pm (approx 30 min brisk walk) Workplace Walk . Based at North Tyneside Council Cobalt Business Park, North Tyneside. Meeting Point- Quadrant East Building. Contact: Donna McTernan on 0191 643 8700 

Wednesday 12noon - 12.30pm (approx 30 mins) Riverside Walkers. Based at the Riverside Centre, North Shields. Meeting point - Riverside Centre reception. Contact: Michael Brown on 0191 643 8264

Wednesday 12noon - 1.00pm (approx 50 min slow walk) St Aiden Walkers. Meeting point -  Saint Aiden's Community Centre, North Shields, Tyne and Wear. Contact: Don Slater on 0191 258 4352

Sunday 10.00am - 11.00am (approx 60 min walk) Coastal Canter. Meeting point - Whitley Bay War Memorial (on the Links across from the Spanish City Dome building). Contact: Gillian Adam on 0191 643 7441

 
Details of walks

  • Social element incorporated within the weekly walks - the walkers stay for coffee/tea on completion of the walks
  • The walks are all led by trained Volunteer Walk Leaders
  • The walks are closely linked to Northumbria NHS Healthcare Trust' 'Healthy Hearts' scheme which includes North Tyneside's GP Exercise Referral Programme and Specialised Weight Management Programmes.
  • The walks are open to walkers of all ages (children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult)
  • Dogs are welcome but  requested to be kept on a lead
  • Self-led walking packs available 'Health Walks in North Tyneside' with 15 maps included
  • The walks are suitable for beginners as there is a front and back leader at each of the walks
  • We try to ensure walks are accessible for pushchairs and wheelchairs
  •  All walks are led by  two qualified walk leaders
  • We have held a number of themed walks for various walk groups to attend including ˜Winter Twigs' ˜Mulled Wine' and 'Wellies Walks'.
