Insurance
The WfH national centre provides adequate third party civil liability insurance cover for all trained Walking for Health walk leaders in England when they are leading health walks.
You are automatically covered by this insurance when you have completed the Volunteer Walk Leader Training – there is no longer a need to register separately for insurance or to renew on an annual basis.
This insurance covers you only in the event that a legal claim for damages is made against you alleging you were negligent on a health walk. It is not personal accident or medical cover insurance.
Remember that overall, walking is one of the safest outdoor activities. Every year tens of thousands of health walks take place, but very few incidents are reported to us and nearly all of these are minor. However it is still important both to follow best practice to reduce the risk of injury or damage still further, and to have insurance in place to protect people running health walks in the unlikely event that things do go wrong.
All accidents or other incidents that might result in a claim must be reported to us using an incident report form. The walk leader should complete this form as soon as possible and ask the person affected and a witness to sign it. It is advisable to complete a form even if the person appears to be fully recovered, as injuries may sometimes take several days to appear. The report form must be passed to the scheme coordinator who should take a copy and keep it safe, in case it needs to be referred to in the event of a claim. The original form must then be sent to the Walking for Health national centre within two weeks of the incident taking place.
