East Lindsey Active (East Midlands)

Conservation work as part of East Lindsey Active

East Lindsey Active is a Green Exercise project aimed at improving the health and well-being of residents in the most deprived areas of East Lindsey.

The whole project is made up of two main themes - 'Get Active' and 'Go Green'.

East Lindsey Active

This element of the Green Exercise programme was run by SUSTRANS and focused mainly on walking and cycling activities and events. This includes a community led Walking for Health scheme and a workplace Walking for Health project.

Health walks are currently held in the Mablethorpe, Skegness and Louth areas. They are popular because various routes are planned and they take in coastal scenery.

East Lindsey Goes Green

The other element of this project involved working closely with local GPs and exercise referral specialists. Patients can now be referred onto health walks or onto outdoor conservation activities.

East Lindsey Goes Green was an exciting 12-week conservation programme that took place at Saltfleetby-Theddlethorpe Dunes National Nature Reserve and in other local green spaces.

A variety of activities were made available by the reserve manager, such as maintenance, constructing benches and widening the easy access trail. The first pilot group was such a success that 5 of the participants became volunteers for Natural England's volunteer programme.

Dr. Irene Carter, GP said:

I am very impressed by the progress made by the Green Exercise Group. We try to encourage
all our patients to lead healthy lifestyles and take regular exercise. However some people are not keen to attend a gym and prefer to be out in the fresh air. I hope that the group continues to develop in the future.
