A new host for Walking for Health – we’re nearly there!

Published: 1st February 2012

The search for a new host of Walking for Health took another giant stride forwards in January, as the organisations interested in taking it on presented their ideas for how they would run it.

Natural England – working with Department of Health – has now taken a close look at all the bids and agreed on who they think would be best suited to the task. We are now having detailed talks with the selected organisation to agree how it will all work.   We hope to let everyone know about the new arrangements by March.

Between now and then there is a lot to think about, and we’re sure you’ll have plenty of questions. We aim to keep you updated via this website, but you can also continue to use our email and ‘phone help-lines until the end of March, and we’ll respond as quickly as we can.

Keeping your information on the database - we need your help

If your walk scheme uses the Walking for Health (WfH) Database, you’ll know just how important it is in getting the best from your walks and making the case for continued funding. We want as much of this valuable data as possible to be retained for the new host of WfH. To achieve this we will be sending a letter to walkers on the database asking if they are happy for their information to be transferred from Natural England to the new organisation that will run WfH from April.

It’s really important for everyone who receives this letter, and are content for their details to stay on the database, to reply and say ‘yes’, otherwise this information will be removed. If you are a Scheme Co-ordinator or Walk Leader, please can you speak to your walkers about how important it is to respond and why. You might like to direct them to this website, where they can read about it themselves.

Thank you for your support on this, which will help this exciting new phase of Walking for Health get off to the best possible start.

For more information about this process, read these FAQs that we've put together for walkers and/or for schemes.

With best wishes,

The Walking for Health team
