The Ramblers support WfH to keep this long-running London scheme alive.

The Ramblers, Britain’s walking charity, have been allocated £4,000 from Richmond Council’s small grant fund and match funding from NHS Richmond to help maintain Richmond’s Active Living Walking for Health Scheme.

Richmond Active Living scheme was one of the longest running and largest Walking for Health Schemes in London. It is currently helping over 400 people improve their health and wellbeing through regular walks.

The grant will go towards maintaining the current programme of walks, with a focus on supporting local volunteers so that it becomes a community led self-sustaining programme in the longer term.

Cllr Pamela Fleming, Strategic Cabinet Member for Community, Business and Culture said:

I am very pleased that we have awarded this funding to the Ramblers. However, this is not a long term grant, and although these walks are already popular in the community, the Ramblers will be working with volunteers to help encourage people to get more involved and volunteer their time and expertise in order to make the walks more sustainable.

As a keen walker myself, I am very aware of all the health and social benefits to walking. It is a free and accessible way to keep fit and healthy and also a lovely way to enjoy all the beautiful parks our borough has to offer.

The scheme offers a number of short walks to choose from: six days a week, all year round in different locations including Richmond Park, Bushy Park and Mortlake.

"For years to come"

Simon Barnett, Head of Walking Programmes and Promotions at the Ramblers added:

We are delighted to be supporting the continuation of this hugely successful scheme. For the last four years Ramblers have been working intensively in Hackney, Lambeth, Lewisham, Southwark and Tower Hamlets to help people improve their own wellbeing by walking as part of everyday life.

We will be working closely with the walk leaders, many of whom are members of the Richmond Ramblers, to keep these walks going for many years to come. We hope that more people will start to join the walks and enjoy the delights that Richmond has to offer.

On behalf of all the Leaders we’d be delighted to see you at the next walk.
